Anthropic · Terminal agent

How to add an MCP server

  • Claude Code is Anthropic's terminal coding agent.
  • Run claude mcp add. Put flags such as --env, --transport, and --header before the server name.
  • For a local server, supply --transport stdio, the name, --, and the command to run it.
  • For a remote server, supply --transport http, the name, and the URL.
  • Set the scope with -s local, -s user or -s project. Project scope writes to .mcp.json in the project root.
  • To add a complete JSON object, run claude mcp add-json <name> '<json>'.

Skills

  • Skills are folders with a SKILL.md file inside. Claude Code reads them from ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ for every project and .claude/skills/<name>/ for one project.
  • Install a skill from a plugin with /plugin install <plugin>@<marketplace> after /plugin marketplace add <owner/repo>.
  • Or copy the skill folder into one of those folders. The install snippet on a skill page does it with git clone.
  • Or run npx skills add owner/repo --skill name.
